Opposition
In my work I wanted to create a narration regarding two opposing forces, two contrasting elements. I
wanted to possibly shed some light on the darker side of life that tends to be mutually ignored or
shamed. Rather than attempting to create something very literal and direct I instead decided to use
objects to act a symbols to narrate a scene. This narration ultimately talks about concepts such as
innocence and sin, and also the toxicity of certain people, death and destruction. The dark apple is
representational of beauty, innocence and purity. It is perfect as it is, untouched pure. The knife is
representational of death, sin and brutality. The narration starts off with the apple itself in harmony, we
are then introduced to the knife which appears to the left of the shot and does not seem so threatening
as of yet. The knife then starts to get closer to the apple and eventually stabs the apple in the back and
continue to stab it in multiple places, also even slashing the flesh, so much so that chunks of the apple
start to fall off. The knife goes further and further so much so that it goes right through the apple and
continues to chop and slice till the core is exposed until all we are left with is the remains of what used
to be a perfect apple. This story can be interpreted as many different things in life, it could be the affect
of sin on innocence such as addiction, it could also serve as a message of the pain of mental illness
which slowly eats away at a person until they are merely a memory of what they once were. This also
speaks of the toxicity of people, bad friendships or relationships. Ultimately it is down to the viewer to
project a story they feel onto this narration, it is open to interpretation.
This sequence of photos narrates a story quite well, it is quite clear that there is a beginning and an end,
there is a change and a process throughout the entire narration. The photos were desaturated to
become black and white as by removing the colours the ambiguity is also removed, it makes the
message clearer as there is one less distraction in the way, the symbolism of colour has also been
removed by doing that which results in a more straightforward thought process throughout the
narrative sequence, this makes the apple appear purely symbolic rather than just an ordinary everyday
apple ready for conumsption . One of the things that is of slight detriment to the series is that the same
exact camera angle was not kept throughout. Sometimes it was moved in an attempt to find a superior
angle or shot. The colour of the table may also be somewhat overpowered as it dominates more or less
around half of the background and also foreground, if the entirety was white except for the apple and
knife it may have made for a cleaner image and possibly also be less distracting and take away less from
the narration. The white background was achieved by placing a large piece of cardboard which had been
prepped with acrylic gesso against what would have been the wall but this created a hard edge and
contrast with the table as previously mentioned, the fact that this hard edge bisects the apple and is also
not level could also be of detriment to the narration as it is a distraction from the apple and knife.
